The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC has brought both controversy and excitement as the four acre, $120 million site was completed. Critics were upset that Lei Yixin, a Chinese sculpture, created it. Art critics did not like his pose and many felt it was to confrontational and not how Martin Luther King Jr., should be remembered. The monument is, also, missing King's wedding band on his ring finger.

But as visitors come to see it for themselves, much of the criticism fades away: In the same way that the storm of controversy around Maya Lin's Vietnam Memorial faded away, as visitors and veterans witnessed it themselves.
Every day at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, visitors stand, look up, and photograph themselves and their families with their cell phones, cameras, and iPads. Many linger and read his quotes on the granite walls. And at night as the sun sets, the monument glows as it is showered with lights.
